Buying a childcare business through a franchise is a major commitment, particularly since you will be working with your chosen franchisor for years. The logo on the sign matters far less than the operational support and underlying business systems. A strong franchisor will address direct inquiries transparently. We encourage prospective owners to present these six critical questions during every discovery call, including ours.
1. What does the FDD actually say about the numbers?
The franchise disclosure document (FDD) is the legal record of what it costs to open a franchise, how the system has grown, and how sound the franchisor’s finances are. You should receive the FDD at least 14 days before you sign a contract or pay any money.
Four sections are particularly important when evaluating your potential investment: Item 7 estimates your initial investment; Item 19 holds any financial performance representations the franchisor chooses to make; Item 20 shows unit growth, closures, and transfers; and Item 21 contains audited financial statements.
2. How long has the franchisor been running their own centers?
Ask when the first corporate location opened and how many are open today. A team with that history has already worked through staffing gaps and enrollment dips. A franchisor that started selling last year is still learning, and you would be learning alongside them. Ducklings has been running thriving early learning centers for more than 30 years, so you can feel confident in the people and systems behind your business.
3. What do training and technology look like before and after opening?
You should see a clear, written plan for both. Ask about the curriculum system, enrollment platform, staff scheduling, and back-office tools. Find out what the timeline is from signing to opening day and what check-ins look like in year one. A sample onboarding calendar is a fair request.
4. How are site selection and territory handled?
Where you open your childcare business matters just as much as how you run it. Your territory decides how many families you can reach, and your site decides how easy it is for them to choose you. Ask how territories are drawn and whether yours is protected. Also find out who runs the site search, who pays for it, and who has final say on the lease. Then determine which markets in your region are still open.
At Ducklings, each territory is defined by population, traffic patterns, and the unique needs of the local community. When we assess a new site, we weigh the quality of area schools, average household income, the number of families nearby, and existing competition. From there, our team helps you find the right space, negotiate your lease, and oversee the build-out. We’re currently opening territories in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia.
5. What do enrollment and staff retention look like at existing locations?
Enrollment and teacher tenure tell you a lot about the health of an early learning franchise, so ask about both. Look for waitlists, how long new centers take to fill, and how long teachers tend to stay. Then ask for franchisee references you can call directly. A franchisor confident in their network will be happy to connect you with current owners.
6. What are the transfer, resale, and multi-unit terms?
Look for reasonable terms that let you sell, transfer, or grow without unexpected surprises, and be sure to read the transfer clause before you sign your first agreement. Ask the franchisor how a transfer works, whether you can secure rights to a second unit, and whether fees differ for additional locations. The answers show whether a franchisor is set up for long-term operators or one-and-done deals. At Ducklings, we provide clear terms and dedicated support to ensure our franchisees are positioned for seamless, successful multi-unit expansion when they are ready to grow.
